- - - - - - - - - - a warning to the people, the good and the evil this is war - - - - - - - - - - His arms were wrapped around his wife’s fragile looking yet beautiful body, as he had held her in his arms last night. He knew she was terrified more than anything last night. Her nightmares were always haunting her from the Hunger Games five years ago, but he knew the day before the reaping was always the worst for her. He hated seeing Vera so upset, worn down, and exhausted, it nearly killed him. He wished it had been him that had entered the arena five years ago and not her. She was an amazing woman and she should never had to endure what she did. However, he was very thankful she was home. And he was able to marry her, and spend the rest of his life with her. She was safe in his arms and he vowed to never let anyone harm her again.
He unwrapped his arms from around her, as the sun hit his face, through their farmhouse’s windows, waking him up. He let out a small groan, kissing his wife's forehead, as he stood up stretching. He looked around and grabbed his nice white -shirt, a pair of nicer jeans, and went to take a quick shower this morning, figuring it would be best to let Vera sleep while she was not tossing and turning. He knew she might have a slight panic when she woke up and he was not lying in bed next to him, but she’d soon realize she was safe and in their bed at home. He usually would spend all morning waiting for her to wake up, as he watched her sleep, because he knew she always felt more safe with him by her side, and because he adored watching her sleep, she was beautiful in her slumber. But today he wanted to wake up to start the day off with no rushes because of the reaping.
After his shower, he walked into the kitchen and made eggs and toast, and placed the dishes on the table, with milk. He had a slight feeling she would not be that hungry but he was going to try to force her to eat even if she did not want to. Breakfast was always the most important meal of the day. His mother would always scold Abe and his younger brother Alex when they would try to skip out from breakfast. Every morning the two were stuck helping at the farm and then forced to head off to school. After, school both the brother's would then have to help butcher animals. Which Abe hated to do, he was glad to be out of his home just for that reason, because now he had the will to do what he wanted because he was over eighteen, and living on his own… well on his own, and with his wife. They made their money by simply raising the animals now and selling them. He preferred it that way.
Speaking of his brother, he was rather worried his brother would be forced into the reaping this year. Alex was only sixteen and had two years left of the risk. However, he tried his best to force a smile this morning, and remain calm for his wife. He knew these reaping’s were a lot worse for her then they were for him. And, really? What was the risk of Alex being called? Alex's name was only in the drawing a total of five times, which was a lot less than some of the other children. Abe had always made sure his younger brother never had to have his name in more than it needed to be.
However, sometimes... the unexpected happened...

Silent. She had to be silent, or her life was over. If she made even a sound, they would wake up and kill her. Vera had waited until she saw the girl from One, Lavender, fall asleep. She was on watch, but thankfully she had given in to her exhaustion and she had given Vera an opening. She had to kill them, and then she would go home. Home to her parents, her farm, and most importantly, Abe. She needed to go home for him.
Vera crept silently over to the three sleeping figures and quickly killed the girl from Four, Aspen, by slitting her throat. It was messy, but it was quick and silent. She wouldn't suffer much. Next, she moved on to the boy, Flame. He was snoring, but it was quickly silenced by Vera's knife. Once he was finished off, Vera approached Lavender. She was a good twenty pounds heavier than Vera and at least three inches taller.
She woke up before Vera got close enough, and was soon advancing on Vera. The two began a fight to the death, both knowing it was ending tonight. The 69th Hunger Games would be done soon. Vera screamed as Lavender cut her shoulder, but she got cocky. Lavender thought Vera was as good as gone. While she was preparing for the final blow, Vera quickly stabbed her right in the heart. Lavender's eyes widened as she fell and died. Vera waited for the cannon. They were all dead, it was just her.
Suddenly, the boy's body rose. He began walking towards her and Vera screamed and drew her weapon. The boy made it to her and then stopped a foot from her. He opened his mouth and blood poured out. It was then that Vera looked at his face. It wasn't Flame at all, it was Abe. "Abe..." Vera whimpered, stumbling backwards. Abe/Flame continued to walk towards her until he was right in front of her. He then collapsed into a bloody mess.
"ABE!" Vera screamed, waking up. She felt tears on her face, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. She had to find Abe, where was he? He wasn't next to her! Had he died? No. After a second of shear panic, Vera saw that his clothes that he had laid out the night before were missing. Vera sighed in relief and slowly got out of bed. She walked over to the clothes she had laid out and picked them up. Vera took a quick shower, then put on a light blue dress with a brown belt around her slim waist. Vera then slipped on a pair of brown flats and set to work on her hair. Deciding to go for a sweet and innocent look this year, she braided her hair and added a ribbon to the back. She didn't look like a great mentor, but that was her strategy. Vera always pulled the sweet angle.
Vera walked quietly into the kitchen. "Good morning." She said, kissing her husband's cheek. Vera sat down at the table and took a small sip of her milk. If it was this hard to drink, she hated to think about how hard it would be for her to eat something. She was never a nervous eater, in fact she was the opposite. Vera could never eat when she was scared or worried about something. "You didn't have to go to this trouble, you know I won't eat any of it." She pointed out, tucking a stray hair behind her ear.

- - - - - - - - - - a warning to the people, the good and the evil this is war - - - - - - - - - - He had heard her mangled scream perking his ear's as he rushed to the bedroom to wrap his arms around her, letting her know she was safe. However, when he walked into the bedroom he already heard the shower running. He took a small step toward the door and listened, hoping she was ok, and not sobbing to death. When it seemed as if she had collected herself to the best of her abilities he walked away, back to the kitchen. A small frown would not leave his pale face though. He automatically hated himself for not being there when she woke up. That must have gave her a horrible freight this morning. He should have known better. But it seemed she was okay now… as okay as she could be anyways. Oh god… Abe really loathed how she had all these nightmares because he knew he couldn’t take them away… he hated not being able to take her pain away. He hated what she had to face, he hated the capitol for making this wonderful woman, face such horrors inside those awful Hunger Games.
As he arrived back into their kitchen, he let his body collapse onto a wooden chair, sitting in front of his breakfast. His thoughts were lost in transitions for a while. He really hated the day of the reaping’s, the scared looks on children's faces, the screams from family members, the cries... the insanity of it all was wretched. He could not believe that capitol got away with bloody murder. He knew district 10 was not the worst off when it came to these games, which had always been a decent plus. This was because they were the farming District. It wasn't like killing wasn't something that happened in this district, many children grew up helping to mend animals, and take them out for slaughter. However, killing cows, chickens, and pigs was a completely new level from killing humans. Some children when they entered the arena from this district were able to fight with knives... pretending inside their messed up heads inside the arena... they were simply animals... not to get attached. It was difficult but sometimes it was the only way... or so he assumed. He knew many parent’s told their children this on their final visit with them before they entered the arena.
He was not really sure how Vera pictured everything... he never asked. He felt that the Hunger Games was something not to be spoken of because it was a past she did not want to relive, even if she did inside her nightmares almost every night. He felt it was better to just let her cry on his shoulders, as he comforted her to the best of his abilities. Besides, he did not really care how she played the games because he was just happy she was alive and won the games. That was all that mattered. Even if this district was the farming district they did not have very many victors.
He was drifted out of his thoughts when he felt her lips upon his cheek, and he closed his eyes briefly. “Morning, beautiful." he said lightly, with a small smile on his face. Even with a day like the reaping he couldn't help but to smile. He still thanked his lucky stars that this beautiful woman was his wife. In his mind, there was no greater woman to marry... she was perfect. “ Sorry, I left you alone this morning.” He said with a slight frown. “ I really should have known better…”
He then proceeded to stand up, walk over to her, and kiss the top of her head. “I know you don't want to eat but you need to." he paused for a mere moment," Like my mom always says it's the most important meal of the day. So try to eat at least some of the toast." his hand then reached down to push the plate a little closer to her.

Vera hated that Abe worried about her so much. She hated it. Vera had proven that she could take care of herself in the arena, yet he still worried about her. Vera guessed she could understand though, she did have nightmares almost every night. Still, she hated that they couldn't have a normal relationship. Vera watched some of the couples walking around District 10 and they just looked so happy and in love. Obviously Vera and Abe were in love and happy with one another, but they always worried about one another so much. It hurt Vera that everything was about the Hunger Games most of the time. They never had moments when they weren't thinking about it or talking about it or worrying about it.
Vera loved Abe with her whole heart, but she missed the relationship they had before her Hunger Games. Back before she was damanged and before they were always worried. Before the nightmares, before the tears, before everything. Things were so simple and sweet. Now, things were still sweet, but not simple at all. Vera hated feeling weak, even if she sort of was. She wished Abe would stop feeling like he had to be there for both of them.
Vera smiled slightly at his comment about her being beautiful. Compared to some girls in their district, she wasn't much to look at, but Abe still thought she was beautiful. Vera thought she was actually quite plain, but Abe didn't. It was sweet of him to think that, she thought. "It's fine, Abe. I'm a big girl." She assured him, reaching for his hand across the table.
She looked up at him when he walked over and kissed her head. "I don't want to get sick up on stage. I mean, my stomach's already pretty nervous." Vera told him, still looking at him. "It's just the Quarter Quell that's got me nervous. Who knows what twisted suprises the Capitol has in store? She asked him, finally taking the plate from him. Vera left it in front of her, not daring to touch anything.
"Besides, which poor kids are going to have to go in this year? I don't...I don't think they'll make it. They never do." Vera said sadly, her eyes glancing down at the table. "I'm the worst mentor ever. Not one of my kids have ever made it out. They hardly ever even make it past the first few days. What if they decide to send in four kids this year? I can't look out for that many. I can barely handle the normal amount. What if these kids are too compassionate to kill? I almost was." Vera neverously ranted. She knew Abe would worry about her, but he would also help her to heal.

- - - - - - - - - - a warning to the people, the good and the evil this is war - - - - - - - - - - The quarter quell was always a step up from the normal agony of the Hunger Games. Abe had not remembered much from what happened in the last one. All he knew was from vivid memories of his mother speaking to his father about the brutality of it all. It was the year that four tributes were sent into the arena; making a total of forty-eight tributes and killing forty-seven children. He also knew that Haymitch who was a District 12 tribute had won that year. On top of that, he knew the memories of that particular Hunger Games haunted his mother horribly because her best friend Lucy Harmons name had been called that year, and she had been slaughtered as soon as she entered the arena, by someone in District 1.
He remembered wondering what was going on because at that time Abe did not fully understand the realism of the Hunger Games. In truth, Abe never really understood the severity of the Hunger Games until Vera had entered. Yes, he seen people he knew around District 10 dying, and he knew it was all just awful. However, it had not really hit home, into that place inside his heart until it was Vera that entered the arena. Making her a part of the game and in mass danger. He had just been so thankful she came out alive. He could not imagine his life without her.
“I know." a nod of his head indicated he was going to not force her to eat at this moment. He just hoped that after the reaping she would be able to eat a little more. He was not going to let her go all day without a bite to eat. He could however handle her skipping out on one measly breakfast. If truth were told his own stomach was in knots as well. He was not all that hungry either because his own nerves were eating at the back of his stomach. He really hoped Vera was going to get through this all right and he really hoped his little brother Alex was not called this year.
He dragged his chair to sit next to her, and then cupped her hand in his, giving her a weak smile. However, that smile altered to a frown as soon as he spoke again. " I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. But, no matter what happens I’m going to be by your side every step of the way." pausing momentarily, he kissed the top of her hand, promises dropping from his voice. " I love you, Vera." he said lightly, " And, what happens, we will face together... and maybe... just maybe this year we will have ourselves another victor. We can only hope because without hope we have nothing..." he expressed, " That's all I could do when you were in that arena... and you made it out alive. And, I thank my lucky stars daily for you." he ended his little speech, attempting another weak smile.

Vera had only heard stories about Quarter Quells. Her parents refused to tell her about past Games for fear of scaring her, so the only things Vera knew about them were what she saw on TV or what she heard in town. She had heard that terrible, terrible things happened in Quarter Quells, making her even more nervous for this year's Games. What if something terrible happened? Well, more terrible than the normal Games. Vera hated to think about it. It made her stomach tighten even more and it made the thoughts of food unbareable.
Vera studied the table before her. She hadn't thought about it a lot, but she was extremely happy that she was married to Abe. Vera had been nervous about it before hand, but now she found it hard to remember what it was like not living with him. She had been hesitant to agree because she didn't want to scare Abe with her nightmares. He knew about them, but still, she was intense during them. Vera screamed, cried, and occasionally kicked or talked during them, all of which weren't a fun thing to be around. She hadn't wanted to frighten him. But now, they were happier than that had ever been and they would be together until they died.
Sighing, Vera pushed her plate away slightly. She would regret not eating later, but oh well. Vera would eat later on on the train with her mentees anyway. No offense to Abe, but that food would be much better anyway. It wasn't his fault that they didn't have as good food as the Capitol. No one had as good food as the Capitol. Still, Vera would gladly take a small, decent meal in District 10 to a large, lavish meal in the Capitol anyday.
Vera glanced up when he took her hands. As usual, she got lost in his beautiful eyes. They always managed to make her forget her troubles and it shocked her how full of love they were. They were her favorite thing about Abe, physically. "I know, and I love you for that." She smiled at his affection and scooted closer to him. "I love you too, Abe. I always will." Vera promised. "I hope we do. I'll do everything I can to get us one." Vera smiled at his speech.
"I'm just glad that we finally got together. I mean, do you think we would have, if it hadn't been for the games?" She asked, biting her lip. "I mean, I've loved you since I was twelve, but I never would have had the courage to tell you until you kissed me. I'm so glad we're together now though." She added, smiling slightly at her husband. Talking about their relationship always relaxed her some.
After a small pause, Vera leaned in for a kiss. She loved Abe's kisses. They always made her forget the horrors of the Games, no matter what. They took away all of her worries and fears, and comforted her like nothing else. After pulling back, Vera smiled again. A real, true smile. "I thank my lucky stars for you daily too." She said quietly.

- - - - - - - - - - a warning to the people, the good and the evil this is war - - - - - - - - - -
The touch of her lips upon his made the butterflies’ swarm inside the pit of his stomach. He could never get enough of her kisses. They were magical and the warmth and tenderness of each kiss was always special to him. He always got lost in the moment, and kissing her never got boring, even though they had been together for a while now, it always felt like a brand new kiss… not quite like their first kiss, but still just as amazing. When they parted, Abe reached up to stroke Vera's cheek giving her a warm smile. " I really do love you," he told her earnestly, the look of head over heels, in love with the girl, lost look in his eyes.
It took him awhile to get back on track, as he remembered the question on hand. He knew it was not really a serious question that was important but he was still going to take the time to give an honest answer. He wasn't really certain what would have happened if she never entered the arena. Abe had loved this girl as far long as he could remember. She was by far the most beautiful girl in District 10 in Abe's eyes. However, a lot of other men would agree with this statement, there was other pretty girls, but it was Abe who had one of the most beautiful girl in District 10. Vera never viewed herself as such but majority of the men in this District had found her pretty, or had a crush at her at one point, mostly after the games, but a select few had tried to get together with her before the games. Of course, it always made Abe a bit jealous but he was fortunate enough that she spent majority of her time with him, being best friends and all.
He knew many men found her fascinating after the Hunger Games because she was a victor. Abe was not quite sure how he was the one that captured her heart. It might have been because they were friends for so long before the games, which meant he showed the attention before all the other men did. He was not sure. However, he was certainly thankful. He was certainly glad he had liked her before the Hunger Games, and she had liked him as well. And her being in the arena gave him the courage to finally own up to liking her… that was the only thing good that came out of the arena. However, Abe liked to think he would have eventually told her either way.
“That’s about the only thing good that came out of the arena. I plucked up the courage to tell you I love you. I figured if you could handle the arena then I could be a man and tell you how I feel.” He explained to her, “ I mean honestly, I’d hope I would have had the courage to tell you eventually even without you entering the arena, it just wouldn’t have been as soon. You entering the arena made me willing to take chances a bit more.” He told her, running a finger along her cheek again. “ I knew when you came back, I was not willing to let you go again. I wanted to be with you… and I was not wasting another minute of life without you… friends or not friends.” He gave a quick smile. “ But, I was certainly glad I wasn’t rejected, and you felt the same way.” He concluded, figuring that would answer the question, besides he could never really be certain because what happened had happened… and it was done and over now.
He then leaned in and gave her another soft kiss on the lips, “ I love you.” He told her for the third time today. He knew he had been saying it a lot but on a day like today… he didn’t want words left unsaid, even if the words were a given. This woman sitting in front of him was his life.
